The Scottish Independence Referendum was held on 18 September 2014. The question asked was "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

Scotland overall voted No by a margin of 55.3% to 44.7%. Of the 32 local authority reporting areas, 28 voted No and 4 voted Yes.

At 84.6%, the turnout was the highest ever recorded for any election within the UK since the introduction of the universal franchise, beating the previous record of 83.9% in the 1950 General Election.
